The Guildford and Farnham Turnpike Trust was created by act of Parliament in 1757.
The current A31 follows the route of the old turnpike apart from the section between the Shepherd & Flock roundabout and the Hogs Back Hotel which was replaced by a direct dual carriageway in 1994. The eastern section between the A3 and the Hogs Back Hotel was upgraded to dual carriageway in 1966 by adding a new eastbound carriageway to the north and using the original carriageway for westbound traffic.
Of the nine milestones on the turnpike, only one is believed to exist today.
The One Mile milestone (1 mile to Farnham and 9 miles to Guildford)
This was just to the east of the old railway bridge. Believed lost.
